We make this pastry every Christmas. It is very fancy looking but simple to make.
.
Ingredients
2 cups flour divided
1 cup + 1 TB butter divided
1 cup + 2 TB water divided
3 eggs cracked in individual bowls
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp almond extract divided
milk (small amount varies)
Directions
- Pre-heat the oven to 375
- Mix together, 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup melted butter, and 2 TB water. On a parchment lined baking sheet, spread this mixture in the form of an oval ring. The ring should be about 3 inches wide. The whole ring should be about 12 inches long and 8 inches across(See the picture for reference). It will be a thin layer, about a 1/4 inch thick.
- In a sauce pan heat 1 cup of water and a 1/2 cup of butter and bring it to a boil.
- Remove from heat and immediately add 1 cup of flour. Add the eggs one at a time stirring until smooth after EACH egg. Once the eggs are incorporated add 1/4 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp almond extract.
- Spread this mixture on top of the first layer.
- Bake for 45 minutes. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
- To make frosting combine 1 TB melted butter, 1 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp almond extract. Add milk a little bit at a time until the mixture is spreadable but not so thin that it will run off. Spread the frosting on the pastry.
